Vivo launched the Y66 in March this year. The device was marketed on its 16MP front facing Moonlight selfie camera. The Vivo Y66 is targeted at selfie lovers. The phone has a 5.5-inch display, 13MP rear, and 16MP front camera. It features a Mediatek MT6750 processor and 3GB RAM with 32GB internal storage.
We got our hands on the device and here are our observations.

Physical Overview
The Vivo Y66 comes in a Plastic back with a metallic finish. The body of the phone is almost entirely plastic (including the back). A thin metal frame is there at the sides of the phone.
At the front, we have 3 capacitive buttons for Recent Apps, Home, and Back below the display. Above the display, we can see the Moonlight flash, earpiece, proximity and Ambient light sensors, and the front camera unit.
The back of the phone is entirely plastic. It does not have a Fingerprint sensor. The back features a slightly protruding 13MP rear camera and a LED flash.
We have the earphone jack, microphone, USB 2.0 port and a single-speaker grill at the bottom.
On the right side of the phone, we have the volume rockers and lock button, which are again made from plastic materials.
The left side of the Vivo Y66 features a Sim card slot. You can either use 2 SIM cards or 1 SIM and 1 microSD card.
Display
The Vivo Y66 features a decent 5.5-inch IPS-LCD panel with HD (1280 x 720 pixels) resolution. Unfortunately, it does not have Gorilla Glass protection, but it does come with a 2.5D curved glass. The display is decent even in bright sunlight. The brightness is a little low. Being an IPS-LCD panel, the Y66’s display has good viewing angles.
The display is a good one but there are devices with Full HD resolution displays in this price range. Also, a better display would ensure that you can view the images you capture in a much better quality on your phone itself.
Camera
Vivo has bet all they have on the Vivo Y66’s camera. The phone features a 13MP primary camera with f/2.2 aperture and a single flash. The Vivo Y66 has a 16MP selfie camera with f/2.0 aperture and Moonlight Flash. Vivo claims that Moonlight flash gives soft, studio like lighting to your selfies.
In real life, the phone performed better than its competitors in this price range. Given that the camera is one of the core selling points of the Y66, this is expected. The Y66 remains strong in this regard.
Hardware and Software
Talking about the hardware now, the phone has a MediaTek MT6750 octa-core processor. The processor is clocked at up to 1.5GHz and is supported by a Mali T860 GPU. The phone comes with 3GB RAM and 32GB internal memory. It supports microSD card expansion up to 256GB.
With this hardware, we can expect a decent performance. In our testing, the Y66 performed adequately good, with multitasking and overall smoothness being decent enough. The phone seems to lag a bit while playing some games, but that is to be expected given the processor being used.
Talking about the software, the Vivo Y66 runs Funtouch OS 3.0 based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Funtouch is a heavily customized Android skin.
Battery and Connectivity
The Vivo Y66 features a 3,000 mAh non-removable battery. This powers the phone for a full day at moderate usage. The phone also does not support fast charging which is a let down.
Coming to connectivity, the Y66 comes with dual SIM and 4G VoLTE support, in addition to Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS. The phone features a 3.5mm headphone jack as well. The one area where it is a let down is the missing fingerprint sensor, which is a norm across all price ranges.
Pricing and Availability
The Vivo Y66 is available to buy in Crown Gold and Matte Black colors. The phone was launched earlier this year at Rs. 14,990. However, it is now available at Rs. 13,990 on Amazon.in and Flipkart, in addition to other online and offline retailers.
Conclusion
The Vivo Y66 is a decent smartphone for selfie lovers. The display resolution and the processor are the first two issues. The Y66 also misses out on a fingerprint sensor but makes it up with smart gestures and other integrated features. In this price range, phones like the Moto G5 and Redmi Note 4 offer better specifications.
The void is filled in the camera department. The phone has a good camera setup and delivers good results. Again, it is a camera centric phone so the camera performance was up to the mark.
All said and done, the Vivo Y66 could have been priced better given the specs it comes with.
