BSNL Plans To Install 75,000 Wi-Fi Hotspots With Rs 4,300 Crore Investment

BSNL started installing Wi-Fi hotspots a few months back and till now it has installed 5,000 units. Further, to increase this count, BSNL is planning to invest Rs. 4,300 crore in this fiscal year and clock a mark of 35,000 Wi-Fi hotspots. Later, BSNL is planning to mark 75,000 units.

According to Manoj Sinha, Telecom Minister, “BSNL is operating in the country for healthy competition in the industry and provide benefits to its consumers. BSNL has already installed 5000 Wi-Fi hotspots and aiming to install 35,000 more this year and 35,000 by next fiscal year.” He also added, “BSNL has been quite competitive and supportive towards its consumers in past few days since the telecom industry has seen a fierce competition.”

The 5000 Wi-Fi hotspots have been installed in collaboration with two private companies but for the next set of Wi-Fi hotspots, the company is going to invest Rs 600 crore.  L&T will roll out the first 20,000 Wi-Fi hotspots while the rest of the 15,000 will be provided by HFCL. All the Wi-Fi hotspots will have common equipment that will be linked to the BSNL’s mobile network and will be used for providing 4G service by the company.

BSNL will disperse Rs 4000 crore fund from its own pool and won’t use the fund that the company gets from the government. Also, the company is also planning to invest Rs 100 crore in upgrading its mobile network. This was confirmed a few days back. Let’s see how BSNL performs in such an intense competition and manages to churn profit.
