Uber, the online cab aggregator has integrated the Unified Payment Interface (UPI) in its Android app in India. It will allow riders who have virtual payment addresses for UPI transactions to pay using the bank-to-bank payment platform.
The feature is currently rolling out in stages hence it may not be available for everyone yet. When you get the feature, you can see the feature by tapping on ‘Add Payment Method’ in the Payment tab.
“We are currently evaluating the possibilities around a comprehensive UPI integration and continuing to engage with the relevant stakeholders. As a first step, we are pleased to be offering our riders the option to use their existing UPI IDs to pay for their Uber rides”, a Uber spokesperson said.
Prior to UPI, Uber riders had an option to pay for a ride with cash, Paytm wallet, or debit/credit card. It is to be mentioned that Uber’s closest rival in India Ola has already integrated UPI earlier in April.
Also, we reported earlier this month that Uber was among several global companies looking to support UPI payments. Apart from Uber, companies such as WhatsApp, Amazon, and Google are in the race to adopt the payment system.
UPI (Unified Payments Interface) is a payment system launched by NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India) which offers the facility of instant fund transfer between two bank accounts on the mobile platform. As per the reports, UPI’s monthly transactions crossed Rs. 1 crore, as more banks and private companies are starting to integrate the payment system.
