I visited IMC 2024 and was blown away by the fantastic innovations showcased. While many of them were AI-driven tech, most were business-oriented, and only a few were consumer-centric. We were introduced to the likes of Airtel, Qualcomm, Erricson, and Vi. Jio, too, showcased many things at IMC 2024, but what caught my eye were their AR Glasses, Cloud computing TV, and the new generation of Jio feature phones.
All Jio launches at Indian Mobile Congress 2024
Jio showcased everything from selfie booths to augmented reality at IMC 2024. The intriguing AR glasses, the nifty Glam AR, a and the new Bharat series featured devices. They even had a set-top box running on Windows 11 using cloud technology. Here’s all that amazed me at the event.
The Jio Bharat Series: The Ultimate Feature Phones
Jio unveiled the Bharat series V3 and V4 in IMC. These feature phones start at Rs. 999 and go up to Rs. 1400. Jio has done a great job making these phones fulfil the basic requirements of an average consumer. The devices are preloaded with Jio apps like Jio Cinema, Jio TV, Savan, and Jio Pay. By adding these applications, Jio ensured their consumers got the full package.
With Jio TV, you can watch live-stream sports and TV shows, whereas the Jio Cinema app allows you to stream and watch movies, daily soaps, and much more. What I like the most is Jio Pay, which allows the user to make UPI payments. This is what truly adds value to the “Digital Bharat” initiative. These devices can also be used as sound boxes while receiving payments from anyone.
All of this is offered at a low monthly price of Rs. 123. The recharge package’s pricing has been designed with the average consumer in mind.
Jio Glam AR – A quick teleport to anywhere in India
Another head-turner from Jio, Glam AR, allows you to convert any fashion catalogue into 3-D. You can then try something similar to what many brands are doing nowadays. You can very easily try glasses, clothes and also jewellery. This is something that can be adopted by various businesses and can change the face of online shopping.
Jio Cloud PC: An Incomplete Delight
Jio Showcased their cloud PC, a subscription-model Chromebook. This can be customized according to the consumer’s needs. You can make changes to the RAM and Graphics card. Jio Cloud PC can convert any old TV into a fully functioning computer. The only requirement is that you must have Jio Fiber and the subscription pack supporting the Cloud PC.
The setup looked clean, with nothing but the setup box and the TV, but the actual performance of the Cloud PC was not impressive. Multiple factors were at play, like the internet connectivity and the cloud not being optimized enough. Jio needed to improve the processing and functionality of the Cloud PC. Still, the concept and the use case outweigh the flaws. Jio is always looking for innovations that can help consumers, and this certainly is one of them.
Jio Smartglasses but How Smart?
With the uproar in the new AR and VR technologies. Jio is prepared to launch its own smart glasses in the next year. They exhibited their functional prototypes at the IMC 2024. Cameras are on either end of the glasses. Charging tip is placed at the tip of the stem.
We tested this device for a brief period at IMC. In that small time frame, It could only identify the object placed in front. When pointed to another object, it got confused. They claim that we can choose the style and the form factor of the smart glasses and get prescription-based smart glasses for people like me who have bad vision. That is a plus. However, the current design exhibited at the IMC was very bulky and not appealing.
Jio claims that these glasses will support Indian languages. In our testing, we confirmed that they can understand Hindi and English. We have to wait for the launch to confirm this claim. If they can deliver everything they promised, these glasses could be a major completion for Meta or the X-Real smart glasses.
Jio Brain and Jio Avatar
At IMC 2024, Jio Brain showcased its capabilities, including smart home integrations, AI suggestions, language translations, and virtual assistants. This plan is to offer MLM as a service to consumers. Jio Brain will empower other enterprises to train their own AI Models based on the data securely leveraged from major players.
In the end, we made some Jio avatars using the Jio Photos App. The app allows users to create text-to-image avatars.
Wrapping Up
Jio focused more on consumer technology, unlike other brands. Even in their products, you can see they are designed with the average consumer in mind. Thier AI is trained in all the regional Indian languages. Jio has excellent plans for AI, and by making it available to the masses at IMC, we got a glimpse of what is about to come.
