Micromax is now the Second most selling phone in Indian Market with 22 percent of the market share. It is second only to Samsung which is tier one smartphone manufacturer and a global leader in android devices. Micromax has been known to provide a cheaper alternative to Samsung mid range and high end devices for the common consumers in Indian market. Let’s compare Micromax Canvas doodle 2(Quick Review) and Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8(Quick Review) and understand better what these rivals are offering with their respective phablets.

Display and Processor

Doodle 2 comes with a 5.7 Inch display with HD resolution which amounts to a pixel density of 220 ppi which is above average at this price range. As far as Mega 5.8 goes, its display specs are inferior to Micromax’s offering Samsung Galaxy 5.8 has a 5.8 Inch qHD display with 540 x 960 pixels resulting in a pixel density of 190 ppi which is not very high. You will see resolved pixels and text won’t be that crisp.

Doodle 2 is powered by the regular MT6589 Quad core chipset which is what we see in all other Canvas Series devices above 10,000 INR. This processor is clocked at a frequency of 1.2 GHz and comes with PowerVR SGX544 GPU. Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 has a dual core Broadcom processor which is clocked at a higher frequency of 1.4 GHz. Samsung has opted for low end Broadcom processor (seen earlier in Galaxy S II) instead of Qualcomm processors we usually see in Samsung Smartphones. A dual core from Qualcomm would have been a much better contender against Quad core MT6589.

Camera and Memory

Micromax Canvas doodle 2 has a 12 MP primary camera with LED flash at the back and a 5 MP shooter in the front which can be used for video calling and self portraits. This is the about the best camera specifications offered by domestic manufacturers. Although, more noise is visible in 13 MP camera of canvas 4 in low lighting conditions than expected. Mega 5.8 comes with a 8 MP primary camera with 3264 x 2448 pixels and LED flash. Primary cameras of both smartphones are capable of Full HD video recording. Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 also has a front camera of 1.9 MP. Looking at these specs, we expect Doodle 2 camera to perform better.

Doodle 2 Comes with 16 GB internal storage which cannot be expanded . RAM capacity is 1 GB which is strictly average at this price range. Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 comes with 8 GB internal storage and you can extend this further to 64 GB. The RAM capacity is 1.5 GB and thus will support smooth multitasking. As far as memory specs go Samsung has an edge. 8 GB of internal storage will be sufficient for most users and you can further enjoy up to 8 GB SD card storage. The RAM capacity has a clear and significant edge over doodle 2.

Battery and Other features

Battery capacity of both these devices is same at 2600 mAh. Micromax claims its doodle 2 Battery will give you a talk time of 8 hrs on 2G. We expect the Mega 5.8 battery to last longer because of less processor cores, but the difference won’t be much

Doodle 2 comes with a whole range of software tweaks like “Blow Air to Unlock”, Smart pause, ‘Proximity answer phone, Proximity dial phone’, Flip to silent, Flip on call for speaker and video . It also comes with a Stylus which hopefully performs better than Doodle 1 stylus. You will also get a flip cover which can be folded to form a video viewing stand. Samsung on the other hand comes with it Touch WIZ UI over Micromax’s stock android.

Both of these phones come with dual SIM functionality and android 4.2 jelly bean Operating system.
