After a very long halt, HTC has finally decided to launch another Desire series phone in India with improved specs and features, which is named as the HTC Desire 828. It looks like a promising mid-ranger which can surely stand strongly in the competition. The Desire 828 comes with HTC Sense UI on top of Android 5.1 Lollipop, and is a dual-SIM smartphone with 4G LTE support for both the SIM. HTC Desire 828 Unboxing, Quick Review [Video]

 Physical Overview

The HTC Desire 828 is majorly made up of plastic; the front panel holds Gorilla glass 4 protection, which makes it a little sturdy from the front. The back and sides are made up of plastic which feels good to touch; the sides are bordered using a stripe painted in metallic shade. The feedback from the volume rocker and lock key is very poor; you cannot usually make out where the button is, until you look at it.

It weighs 149 grams, which is a normal bulk for 5.5 inch phone. This is a uni-body phone and feels solid in hand. The dimensions are 157.70 x 78.80 x 7.90 mm, and 7.9 mm thickness is not quite good to have a effortless hold on the device. Single handed operation is not a task due to the light weight and thin body.

The volume rocker and the lock/power button are on the right side,

User Interface

HTC Desire 828 has latest version of HTC Sense UI. Considering at the overall look and feel, it is very different from the original Android Lollipop. Like Samsung’s TouchWiz UI HTC has also changed the Homescreen, settings menu, widgets, notification panel, and almost everything you can think of. Other than these tweaks, it has included some additional applications and tools to make your experience different and better. But let me tell you, HTC Sense UI is not one of the most loved UI available in the market.

It offers lot of customization options to change the look and feel of your device. Despite o many tweaks and add ups, the UI felt smooth and snappy during our initial usage.

Camera Overview

The Desire 828 comes with 13 MP rear camera with autofocus, OIS and LED flash with a 4 MP front camera 1/3” sensor size, 2µm pixel size. The Camera UI is very basic and easy to use, the viewfinder extends across the screen and the toggles do not interrupting while shooting a picture or video. OIS makes the camera experience better and adds a finesse to the pictures.

The rear camera images were nicely produced, the colours are vibrant and the details look sharp. Images in proper light show excellent details but in some cases the pictures get over exposed when brought in front of the sunlight or bright lights.

Front camera performs really well in proper light, details are fine but sometimes the colour reproduction is not so accurate. Using the front camera in low light may not produce clear images but the sensor does a good job in hunting down the max amount of light even in dark nights.

Conclusion

HTC Desire 828 is a good device, it does not dominate in a specific department but it offers reasonable and up to the mark features in all of the departments including the hardware, camera, display, UI and design. The only issue is the heavy UI and pre-installed apps which restrict you to a very limited amount of available storage in case you have not inserted a memory card. It offers Optical Image Stabilization for the rear shutter, which is rare in this range of smartphones.
