Gionee E5: An Upcoming Powerhouse From Gionee

Gionee has been very active in their marketing in India, and have released an array of phones and phablets in a very short span of time. This has resulted in the manufacturer getting a lot of attention in the media, especially the internet. The latest news from the Gionee bandwagon is the purported Gionee E5, which is a powerful quad core with the updated MT6589T chipset running at 1.5 GHz and by the looks of it, comes in a unibody design.

This approach (unibody design, if true) seems highly aggressive for a relatively new manufacturer. If the move is indeed pulled off well by Gionee, they are sure to have a massive fan base in India where Chinese players like Gionee have been receiving a surprisingly warm welcome by users.

The device in question, the Gionee E5, looks like has been inspired by the Lumia series from Nokia. At least the colours of the back panels suggest so. The phone shows off yellow, white and black panels in a series of leaked images. That’s pretty much for the looks, coming to the performance side, the phones seems to have some serious power. Benchmarks show the phone scoring close to 16,000 points in the AnTuTu benchmarking test, which makes it a competitor to the Samsung Galaxy S3, albeit in a much different form factor.

The phone will come with DTS surround sound (like most other Gionee phones) and high-quality earbuds, which seems like a move to catch the attention of audiophiles’ in India.

Speaking of the imaging hardware, the phone will pack an 8MP rear camera, which will be assisted with an LED flash for low light conditions, and a 5MP front camera for video calling. The USP of the phone will be the 4.8 inch Super AMOLED screen and the fact that the phone is only 6.85mm thick, making it one of the thinnest phones in the market. Due to this, there will be restrictions on the phone like no expandable memory, users will have to make do with the 16GB on-board.

There is no word on pricing or availability from Gionee as yet. Speculations say that the device will be priced anywhere between the 13-19,000INR mark, and should be available in India (and China) by the end of July or early August.

Gionee is gradually making their mark in the Indian market, and are proving to be tough competitors to Indian manufacturers like Micromax which are trying hard to keep costs down in order to compete with Chinese manufacturers. The Gionee E5 is expected to compete with a series of devices from Micromax, Karbonn, Xolo, and the likes.
