Table of Contents

With the introduction of dark mode in Android 10 and iOS 13, all developers have started rushing to seed dark themes in their apps. And Facebook, being no different, too, is one of them. The giant implemented an optional night mode way earlier in its Messenger app, accompanied by Instagram. However, we’ve been waiting for the same on the Facebook app and website.

Fortunately, it has finally started to arrive, letting you have a more efficient and eye-friendly experience on social media. Here’s more on Facebook’s new dark mode.

Dark Mode for Facebook

On Desktop

How to Enable Dark Mode in Facebook

Facebook has lately started testing out the dark interface for its website. And if you belong to the testing group, you’ll be prompted to choose between light and dark designs the next time you visit the site.

The feature will be rolled out soon for the public, but till then, you can use the workaround mentioned below to enable dark mode on Facebook for desktop. Note that it’s not the exact iteration of Facebook’s original dark mode.

  1. On your computer, download and install the Google Chrome browser. If done already, make sure that you’re running the latest version (you can check for updates in Settings> About Chrome).
  2. Now, type chrome://flags/in the URL bar and press enter.
  3. In the Chrome Flags page, search for “dark,” and you’ll see an option dubbed as Force Dark Mode for Web Contents.
  4. Change it from Default to “Enabled with Selective Conversion of Non-image Elements.”

That’s it. Relaunch Chrome and revisit Facebook. It’ll now open with a dark interface, and so will the other sites.

On Android and iOS

How to enable dark mode in Facebook

Facebook’s mobile app currently doesn’t offer an option for enabling dark mode. However, multiple users, including me, have witnessed random appearances of the dark interface in the app. And as confirmed by app researchers already, Facebook might launch a full-fledged dark mode for both Android & iOS in the coming time.

In the meanwhile, you can use some alternative ways to enable dark mode in the Facebook app. Just like the workaround for desktop, you can use Facebook’s web version in the Chrome app, with the “Force dark mode” toggle turned on in the flags menu. You can enable it using the steps mentioned above.

Additionally, you can use third-party Facebook clients such as Faster for Facebook Lite, Friendly for Facebook, Phoenix, Fella and more. For users running Android 10, we’d suggest enabling the “Force dark mode” option (if available) in your phone’s display/ developer settings. This way, you can enjoy dark UI in your Facebook app, without official rollout.
