Xiaomi Redmi 4 Vs Redmi 4A Quick Comparison Review

Xiaomi launched one of its new budget segment smartphone, Redmi 4 in India. This smartphone is the successor to the last year’s Redmi 3S and 3S Prime. The smartphone comes with pretty similar specifications as it’s predecessor. However being a budget segment smartphone Redmi 4 comes with a pretty premium build, it has got a metal unibody design. The smartphone is priced at Rs. 6,999 for the 2GB variant which makes it a very close competitor to the recently launched Redmi 4A. So let’s have a side by side comparison between both smartphones.

Design and Build Quality

Talking about design and build quality, they both are very different. Where Redmi 4 comes with a typical Xiaomi metallic unibody design with 2.5 curved glass, Redmi 4A comes with a plastic body. Redmi 4 feels much more premium to look and hold as compared to Redmi 4A. The metallic body of Redmi 4 adds premium look to the device although being a budget segment smartphone. Talking about dimensions, both are almost same.

Display

There’s hardly any difference between the displays of two smartphone. They both feature a 5 inch LCD IPS display panel with HD (1280 x 720) resolution. However the 2.5D curved glass on Redmi 4 gives it an edge over Redmi 4A. Although this isn’t a deal breaker feature but definitely worth pointing out.

Hardware and Storage

The Xiaomi Redmi 4 comes with a Snapdragon 435 chip-set while the Redmi 4A features a Snapdragon 425 SoC. The Snapdragon 435 on Redmi 4 is an octa core chip-set with Adreno 505 GPU whereas the Snapdragon 425 on Redmi 4A is a quad core chip-set with Adreno 308 GPU. In terms of processing power and graphics, Redmi 4 is definitely better than Redmi 4A as it has got four more cores and latest GPU.

Storage-wise, the two smartphones are similar too. They both features 2 GB of LPDDR3 memory combined with 16 GB of internal memory. However, there are also 3 GB / 32 GB and 4 GB / 64 GB variants of the Redmi 4 priced at Rs. 8,999 and Rs. 10,999 respectively.

Software and Performance

Both the competing phones run on similar Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow operating system with MIUI 8 on top. Performance as well as gaming is exactly the same as the both have similar experience.

The Redmi 4 also comes with an optional Android 7.0 Nougat based beta version of MIUI 8. You may opt to install it at your own discretion or wait for the stable release.

Camera

Speaking of the camera, the Redmi 4 performs slightly better than the Redmi 4A. Both smartphone feature similar sensors.  A major difference between the two is that the while the Redmi 4 comes with PDAF, the Redmi 4A only comes with autofocus. The Redmi 4 is the winner in the camera department.

Connectivity

Both comes with exact same connectivity options. Connectivity options include 4G LTE, Dual SIM, VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Wi-Fi Direct, Bluetooth 4.1, GPS/A-GPS, GLONASS, BDS, IR Blaster, and micro-USB 2.0. However Redmi 4 comes with Wi-Fi 802.11 dual-band (2.4 GHz + 5 GHz) unlike Redmi 4A which features a single band Wi-Fi (2.4 GHz only).

Battery

The Xiaomi Redmi 4 comes with a 4,100 mAh battery while the Redmi 4A comes with Redmi 4A with a smaller 3,120 mAh battery. The Redmi 4 is the obvious winner in this department.

Conclusion

Though there is not much of a difference between two devices but Redmi 4 is indeed better in some of the departments. In terms of performance and processing, Redmi 4 is indeed better than Redmi 4A. Moreover in terms of build, Redmi 4 is much better due to the metallic build and the 2.5D curved glass on it. Overall Redmi 4 is better than Redmi 4A and spending 1,000 more bucks on the smartphone is definitely worth it.
