Xiaomi Redmi Y2 vs Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro: Which one to buy?

Xiaomi released its new iteration in Y series smartphones- Redmi Y2. It is a selfie-centric budget smartphone with a 16MP AI selfie camera and dual camera setup at the rear. Redmi Y2 is priced at Rs. 9,999 for the base variant.

The new Xiaomi Redmi Y2 comes with almost similar design and camera specifications as the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro which was released back in February at a slightly higher price point. Apart from the similarities, there are lots of differences as well, such as the hardware. We are going to compare both of these phones to help you decide which one you should buy.

Design and Display

Xiaomi Redmi Y2 comes with a plastic encasing which has a premium metallic finish and a gentle curve at the back. The smartphone still feels sturdy and has an excellent grip to hold on to. The smartphone comes with a fingerprint sensor placed at the back of the smartphone with the vertically positioned dual camera setup with a flashlight.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro looks exactly like the Redmi Y2; it comes with a similar design, same thickness and metallic finish at the back. The encasing on Redmi Note 5 Pro is made of aluminum and feels premium than the Redmi Y2. The fingerprint sensor is also placed at the back of this smartphone with the similar dual camera module.


The display on both the smartphones is similar except for the resolution and the pixel density of the display panel. Both smartphones come with a 5.99 inches IPS display panel, the resolution on Redmi Y2 is an HD+ (720 x 1440) whereas the resolution on the Redmi Note 5 Pro is FHD+ (1080 x 2160).

Camera

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro comes with a dual camera setup including a 12MP sensor with f/2.2 aperture and one 5MP sensor with f/2.0 aperture. The smartphone comes with Phase detection autofocus and dual LED flash. The camera can capture 1080p FHD videos at 30 fps, but it lacks any kind of stabilization. The selfie camera is a 20 MP shooter which has f/2.2 aperture size and LED flash as well.

The Xiaomi Redmi Y2 comes also comes with a dual camera setup which includes similar sensors to the Redmi note 5 Pro. The dual camera setup consists of a 12MP sensor with f/2.0 aperture size and a 5MP secondary sensor for depth effect. The smartphone comes with a 16MP front-facing selfie camera which comes with AI capabilities, Portrait mode and LED flash.

Performance

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 SoC running at a clock rate of 1.8GHz. This octa-core CPU is paired with a 4GB/ 6GB RAM and 64GB internal storage (expandable) which is enough for smooth and seamless multitasking and dominant performance. The smartphone is running the MIUI 9.5 which is based on the Android 8.0 Oreo OS.

The Xiaomi Redmi Y2 comes is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor, all eight cores are running at a clock speed of 2.0 GHz. The processor is then coupled with 3GB/ 4GB RAM and 32GB/ 64GB Storage which is expandable via dedicated micro SD card slot. The Redmi Y2 also runs on the MIUI 9.5 which is based on the Android 8.1 Oreo and both the smartphones are eligible for the MIUI 10 update.

Battery and Connectivity

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro comes with a 4000 mAh battery which supports Quick Charge 2.0 fast charging while the Redmi Y2 comes with 3080 mAh battery which does not support any kind of fast charging tech.

One more difference in both the smartphones is that Redmi note 5 Pro comes with Bluetooth 5 while the Redmi Y2 comes with Bluetooth 4.2. Both the smartphones come with a fingerprint sensor, Wi-Fi, micro USB 2.0 port and A-GPS/GLONASS.

Conclusion

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro is a straight winner here because it got a better display, better hardware and more RAM in comparison to the Redmi Y2. Some features like Bluetooth 5 and Quick Charge 2.0 is missing in Redmi Y2. Even if Redmi Y2 didn’t compete well with the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro, it offers band for your bucks.
